Apple has started rolling out a software update for the AirPods Max, bringing the over-ear headphones up to version 4E71. The update for AirPods 3 is now available.
Today’s updates are for AirPods 2, AirPods Max, and AirPods Pro, but not for AirPods 3 or any Beats headphones. The update’s version number is 4E71, which is an improvement over the previous version of 4C165.
Unfortunately, Apple does not provide release notes for AirPods firmware updates. Instead, customers must wait for their AirPods 2 or AirPods Pro to receive the update before investigating what has changed.
How to keep your AirPods Max, AirPods 2, and AirPods Pro up to date
Apple also makes it difficult to manually update your AirPods to new firmware updates, as you are surely aware. Instead, fresh software updates will be installed when the AirPods are connected to your iPhone through Bluetooth, according to Apple.
To check your AirPods firmware version:
- Open the Settings app on your iPhone
- Navigate to the “Bluetooth” menu
- Find your AirPods in the list of devices
- Tap the “i” next to them
- Look at the “Firmware Version” number
